A delegation from Shanghai General Hospital (SGH), an affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, recently concluded a successful exchange program with several prestigious German hospitals in Ulm and Munich. The visit, which took place from June 10 to June 14, 2024, aimed to strengthen international cooperation, exchange knowledge, and explore advancements in medical research and healthcare practices.
Ulm University Hospital Visit
The delegation began their journey in Ulm, visiting the University Hospital of Ulm on June 10-11. This part of the visit was marked by a series of symposiums and departmental tours designed to provide an in-depth understanding of Ulm’s medical research and clinical expertise.
On the first day, the delegation attended a symposium titled “Mechanistic Insight and Novel Therapeutic Approaches in Diseases” held at the N27 multimedia room. Keynote speeches were delivered by such as Prof. Michael Weber, President of Ulm University, and Prof. Udo X. Kaisers, Medical Director of Ulm University Hospital. Presentations covered a range of topics from neuro-immunopathology to advancements in cancer therapy.
On the second day, the delegation attended insightful lectures led by Prof. Thomas Seufferlein, who introduced them to the Center of Visceral Oncology, Center of Personalized Medicine, and the Department of Internal Medicine. These sessions provided valuable insights into Ulm’s integrated approach to specialized care and cutting-edge research in these fields.
Additionally, Dr. Jessica Lindenmayer delivered a lecture on “Organoids and Bioprinting: Push Your Research to the Next Level,” which explored the revolutionary impact of these technologies on medical research and treatment. Dr. Lindenmayer also led a comprehensive tour of the related laboratories, offering the delegation a first-hand look at the advanced techniques and innovative research being conducted at Ulm University.
University Hospital Rechts der Isar, Munich Visit
The visit continued in Munich from June 12-14, where the delegation was hosted by the Technical University Munich’s University Hospital Rechts der Isar and the German Heart Center. The program included visits to specialized departments, presentations, and discussions with leading medical experts.
The delegation was officially welcomed by Prof. Dr. Peter Biberthaler, followed by insightful lectures and panel discussions on topics such as femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, treatment of open fractures, and modern strategies in surgical treatment.
On June 13, the group visited the German Heart Center, where they observed advanced cardiology practices and engaged in discussions with the hospital’s administration to understand the operational management and innovative healthcare solutions implemented there.
Throughout the visit, both sides emphasized the importance of global cooperation in healthcare. The Shanghai delegation highlighted the potential for joint research initiatives and knowledge exchange to enhance medical education and patient care. Fang Liu, Director of International Cooperation at SGH, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting the potential to integrate new insights and practices into SGH’s operations.
As the delegation returns to Shanghai, they bring back valuable experiences and insights that are expected to contribute to the continued advancement of Shanghai General Hospital and its role in global healthcare innovation. This exchange program not only reinforced existing ties but also paved the way for future collaborations aimed at addressing global health challenges through shared expertise and innovation.
