A team of clinicians and administrators from Shanghai General Hospital visited the Charité Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCC) in Berlin from November 20 to 23, 2023, to explore the center’s innovative approaches to cancer care. This visit facilitated an exchange of knowledge and best practices aimed at enhancing cancer treatment and research through international collaboration.

During their four-day visit, the delegation from Shanghai General Hospital was immersed in the CCCC’s multidisciplinary cancer care framework, gaining insights into its history, organizational structure, and advanced medical practices. The visit began with an introduction to the center’s holistic approach to cancer treatment, including detailed sessions on psycho-oncology, cancer registry management, and the integration of various specialties into patient care. A historical tour of the Charité campus provided context and a deeper appreciation for the institution’s prestigious legacy.

The visit also highlighted the CCCC’s precision oncology and multidisciplinary tumor board processes. The Shanghai General Hospital delegation participated in lung and molecular tumor board meetings, observing the interdisciplinary collaboration essential for effective cancer treatment. These sessions included discussions on certification processes and the strategic integration of cutting-edge technology and data-driven methodologies in oncology.

On the third day, visitors observed robot-assisted thoracic surgery and visited the Breast Cancer and Gynecological Tumor Centers. They also engaged with the Department of Pathology to understand diagnostic processes.

The final day of the visit focused on the CCCC’s Clinical Trial Unit (CBF). Delegates explored the European Clinical Trials Unit (ECTU) and the latest developments in cellular therapies. A comprehensive tour of the clinic and laboratory facilities offered insights into the practicalities and innovations in clinical trial management. The visit included discussions on emerging concepts in treating Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC), emphasizing the center’s focus on pioneering research and treatment methodologies.
