Research studies have shown that medical students and young doctors who are just starting their medical practice are ill-equipped to cope with certain medical issues, as current training methods and tools do not provide a realistic and intuitive training environment. This results in young doctors often feeling a lack of confidence when faced with certain medical tasks. STEP is a virtual reality-based medical simulation that combines research data from international medical journals and official treatment guidelines with PhysioLogics™ algorithms to simulate a variety of cases in a hospital training scenario and provides feedback on the trainees' actions based on realistic physiological mechanisms, disease progression and pharmacology. Developed by ThreeDee, a subsidiary of Swiss International Health Care, in collaboration with the University Hospital of Würzburg, STEP has received numerous innovation awards and extensive media attention in Germany since its launch.
